"Cantata" (1996)

"Cantata" is based on "Tips", a score by Steve Lacy that puts music to words from "Le jour et la nuit" (Day and Night) by George Braque, a series of aphorisms, speculations, and observations from the artist.

The challenge here was to expand space in a very small area using vanishing points and volume by creating a box that transforms from the inside out into a playful, surrealist three-dimensional space with multiple facets.  This approach to space uses three double-sided screens to create a new universe for every breath of wind, multiplying figures and their interactions through masks that distort perception of proportions.  Masks emerge from the void and lead us to our deepest self, where correspondences mesh wordlessly with our own experience.
